Saturday, April 05, 2003No such thing as a perfect justice system: Bunye
PRESIDENTIAL spokesman Ignacio Bunye Friday admitted that the Philippine justice system is faulty, but “so is everybody’s, including the United States’.” The statement was made after the US’ State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor described the Philippine judicial system as corrupt and inefficient. But Bunye insisted that the Philippines is doing what it can to correct these deficiencies. “There are some deficiencies in any legal system. This is true not only in the Philippines but even in the US, they have deficiencies. As far as the Philippine government is concerned, as far as the court administrators are concerned, we’re trying to address these problems,” he said. The US findings were contained in a 20-page report released March 31. The report also showed that though the Philippine government “generally respects” human rights, there were “serious problems” in some areas. The report added that there were some elements of security services who are responsible for arbitrary and unlawful and, in some cases, extra-judicial killings, disappearances, torture, and arbitrary arrest and detention.
